The cookies and browser storage the product uses to sign you in, keep you secure and remember your preferences — and how to control them.
Cookies are small files a website stores in your browser; local storage is a similar space a site can write to. ClikServ Course Studio uses a small number of both — to keep you signed in, to keep your account secure, and to remember your preferences. It uses no advertising cookies and no third-party analytics trackers. This page lists everything it uses and how to control it; the Privacy Policy covers the rest of your data.
Cookies required to sign in and stay secure
These are set only when you sign in. They are httpOnly (scripts in the page cannot read them), same-site (other sites cannot send them), and Secure on the live product (sent over HTTPS only). Blocking them means you cannot sign in.
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
clikserv_student | The product | Your student or teacher session: a signed reference to your account, so each request is yours. Signed with a server-side secret — it cannot be forged or changed. | Until you sign out, delete your account, or close the browser. |
clikserv_app | The product | An administrator's session after entering the access code. Holds a digest of the code, never the code itself. | Until the administrator signs out or closes the browser. |
| Clerk’s cookies | Clerk (our sign-in provider), when a deployment uses it | Keep you signed in with Clerk between the sign-in screen and the product, and protect the sign-in flow against bots (a Cloudflare challenge may set a cookie on Clerk's pages). | Per Clerk's settings; cleared when you sign out. |
| Stripe’s cookies | Stripe, on its own checkout and billing pages | Fraud prevention and keeping the checkout session together while you pay. Set on Stripe's domain, not ours. | Per Stripe's policy. |
Preferences kept in your browser
These live in your browser’s local or session storage, never leave your device, and hold no personal data. Clearing site data removes them; the product keeps working with defaults.
| Key | Purpose |
|---|---|
clikserv-theme | Your light, dark or follow-the-system choice. |
clikserv.signupIntent | Remembers, for one browser session, that you chose “I'm new here” before leaving for the sign-in provider, so the return trip can tell you if that email already had an account. |
clikserv:studentId | On older installations only: the id of a local learning profile an administrator used before accounts existed. |
clikserv:lab:livePreview | Whether the coding lab's live preview is switched on (and the same for the HTML preview). |
Activity and usage tracking
- Active time. While you are signed in, the page notices that you are interacting (moving the pointer, typing, scrolling, tapping) and, about once a minute, tells the product the time ranges in which you were active. Only timestamps are sent — never what you typed, where you clicked, or which keys you pressed. A tab left open and untouched reports nothing. This is what “time spent” means on My stats, in your teacher’s view and on the admin’s activity grid. No cookie is involved.
- AI usage. Each AI request is recorded server-side (feature, tokens, cost, time) to count credits and monitor cost. See the AI Usage and Learning Data Disclosure.
- No third-party analytics. The product does not load Google Analytics, advertising pixels or similar trackers, and does not share browsing data with advertisers. Our sign-in provider may collect basic telemetry about its own components on its pages.
- Server logs. Requests are logged briefly with the IP address and browser type for security and debugging, and sign-in attempts are rate-limited by address.
How to control cookies
- Sign out (account menu) to clear the sign-in cookies on that device; deleting your account clears them too.
- Browser settings let you see, block or delete cookies and site data for this site — look for “Cookies and site data” or “Privacy” in your browser’s settings. Blocking the required cookies means you cannot sign in; clearing storage resets your theme choice.
- Private or incognito windows discard everything when closed.
- Because the product sets no optional or advertising cookies, there is no cookie banner and nothing to opt out of beyond the required ones.
